The city of Vis is situated on the homonymus island in a large protected bay. The first place located on this area was Issa, funded by a Greek colonists that came from Sicily. The city of Vis was built after the 15^th century, but until the early 19^th century it was a very small place.

The habitants mostly work in the tourism and hospitality activities.

Vis is known as the only palm greenery present on the east coast of the Adriatic Sea.
