Cavtat is a small coastal town on the southern side of the Zupska inlet and 20km south of Dubrovnik. This town was built on the southern slopes of the Rat peninsula with the Tiha inlet on the southern side.
Being so close to Dubrovnik, tourism in Cavtat has grown and it has become quite a popular tourist destination in Southern Dalmatia. For example, accomodations include a wide range of private homes which offer rooms and apartments, villas, campsites and hotels.
Cavtat's backdrop, which are the hills of Konavle, is also a source of economic growth because they are a source of quality homemade wine and delicious traditional cuisine. Konavle is an area of hills and valleys rich in vegetation and there are around 30 villages which cover its plains. This area is unique because, out of its rocky landscape, much vegetation grows such as forests filled with pine trees, cypresses, and underbrush, lush vineyard, orchards filled with fig trees, olive trees, fruit trees as well as many types of vegetables.
In the past this was an area which was covered in summer home and economic buildings which once belonged to the leaders of Dubrovnik. Cavtat was founded by the Illyrians and then followed by an exchange of many cultures which left an array of different types of architecture. Cavtat was under greek rule, roman rule as well as under the rule of the Republic of Dubrovnik. Cavtat, throughout the past centuries, had been created along the same principles as Dubrovnik. Through each historical era its creativity is visible today with the many cultural and historical monuments which stand throughout the town. In the center of Cavtat, for example, there is the prince's castle, the Bogisceva library, the church of St. Nicolas, a franciscan monastery and the palace of Kaboga.
