Bjelolasica is the north-western part of the Velika Kapela mountain range. The highest peak of Bjelolasica - Kula, 1,534 m - is the highest in the whole region of Gorski Kotar. The region of Bjelolasica features plant species of mountain grasses and juniper trees, while the beech forest belt also contains greater maple trees. The wider region of Bjelolasica, with the strict nature reserve of Bijele and Samarske Stijene, has been proposed to be set aside as a nature park. At the foot of the south-eastern side of Bjelolasica is the largest winter resort in Croatia, built in 1986. It has been conceived as a year-round centre for winter sports and recreation. Inside the resort are a ski lift (from the hamlet of Vrelo to the ridge of the mountain) and accommodation facilities. The construction of additional accommodation, sports and recreational facilities has been planned, as well as the construction of a ski-mountain inn on the Gomirkovica plain. In the surrounding mountains there are numerous mountain trails, especially around Bijele and Samarske Stijene.
The bigest place surroundings Bjelolasica is: Mrkopalj, Begovo Razdolje, Vrelo, Ogulin, Jasenak, Sabljaci, Vrbovsko te Ravna gora. Mrkopalj is a small town in the region of Gorski Kotar, 16 km southeast of Delnice, in the western part of the Kapela massif, situated in the Mrkopalj field. First mentioned in 1477 as a property of the Frankopan dukes; by virtue of the bull of Joseph II (14th of March, 1785) it gained the rights of a market town. Chief occupations include farming, livestock breeding and wood processing. Mrkopalj has developed into an important winter resort (skiing) and hunting (high game) tourist centre. Begovo razdolje is a village in Gorski Kotar, located at the foot of Velika Kapela Mountain. Intact nature of this region invites to vacation also in the summer, when the favourite pastime is berry-picking (whortleberries, raspberries, mushrooms) or walking through wonderful belvederes. Ogulin is a town at the river Dobra in Gorski Kotar, at the foot of Klek in the mountain massif of Velika Kapela. The very centre of the town represents an exquisite hydrogeological fenomenon - this is where the river Dobra descends under the precipices through a vast opening called Djula´s Abyss (named after a girl who, according to the legend, threw herself in the abyss for unhappy love). Jasenak, a village in Gorski Kotar, in the area of Velika Kapela Mountain, 18 km southwest of Ogulin. Situated amidst the spacious Jasenacko field, the village is known as the traditional starting point of ascents to Bijele Stijene (White Rocks). Vrbovsko is surrounded by forests, pastures and meadows and is an attractive place for vacations in nature. Picturesque courses of three rivers, the Kupa, the Dobra and the Kamacnik, provide opportunities for kayaking and canoeing. Ravna Gora is a picturesque town in the central part of Gorski Kotar, a favourite place of hunters, mountain climbers and spelaeologists. The major tourist attractions of this area include forests rich in game - brown bear, hare, lynx, deer and roe deer, marked mountain trails leading to beautiful vista points, such as the one on Javorova Kosa (1,016 m) or Velika Visnjevica (1,367 m), and interesting caves - the Kicljeva Cave, with the longest cave system in Croatia explored so far. The mountain lodge Lokanda is the starting point for ascents to the highest mountain in Gorski Kotar - Bjelolasica (1,533 m).
